Gangotri is One of the main religious places among the four Char Dham pilgrimage areas, Gangotri is situated in Uttarkashi, is closely related to Goddess Ganga, the river that we know as Ganges. The history of Gangotri dates back to centuries when Goddess Ganga transformed herself into a river to dissolve the sins of King Bhagirath’s forefathers, following his penance.     Winter (November to April)
    Winter season starts from November to April, and the weather is freezing cold with heavy snowfall. Gangotri temple is closed during this period. Only pro-trekkers and mountaineers visit the area for various trekking expeditions near Gangotri.
    Summer (May to June)
    The summers in Gangotri are cool, with rains in the months of May and June. The gates of Gangotri temple open during the start of summers. The weather is pleasant with observed maximum temprature around 25°C and can get very cold at night. This is the best season for pilgrimage and sightseeing trips.
    Monsoon (July to mid-September)
    Monsoons in Gangotri region starts from late July to August, and it makes difficult to reach the temple due to various landslides. Pilgrims are suggested to avoid travel during monsoon season..

    By Flight: The Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun is the nearest airport to Gangotri. Air India operates flights to and from Delhi. IndiGo provides flights to and from Bangalore, Delhi, Hyderabad, and Mumbai. Jet Airways flies to Bangalore, Delhi, and Mumbai. SpiceJet offers flights from Hyderabad, Delhi and Mumbai.
    By Train: 234km from Gangotri is the Rishikesh railway station on National Highway number 58. The Hemkunta express runs to and from Rishikesh via Haridwar, Roorkee, Ambala, Ludhiana, Jalandhar, and Jammu Tawi. Also, the Shri Ganganagar Express takes a slightly different path to connect Rishikesh to well-known cities like Bhatinda, Ambala, Roorkee, etc.
    By Road: From Kashmiri Gate Station in Delhi, the buses first go to Ghaziabad, get on NH 58, pass through Meerut and Haridwar, and then reach Rishikesh. From Rishikesh, National Highway 94 takes you to Dharasu via Ampata and Tehri. Dharasu’s National Highway 108 runs only in Uttarakhand and has a length of a mere 127 km reaching Gangotri, which is its end point. State transport corporations of Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, ply buses on this route, along with several private operators.
